Cross College Awards Winners 2009

The award winners came from all areas of the college and were representative of the huge range of work Sussex Downs College undertakes which has almost 6,000 14-19 year-old students, 10,000 adult learners and 1,700 employers.

Host for the evening was Lynsey Bartlett, presenter of The Big Breakfast show on Heart FM. Lynsey is a former student and employee at the college. The awards were presented by Nigel Waterson, MP for Eastbourne.

Dr John Blake, Principal and Chief Executive said: “Our success as a college is due to the commitment, enthusiasm and sheer hard work of students and staff alike. Our Beacon status means we are recognised as being an outstanding college by external organisations. I would like to thank our sponsors who have generously supported this event.”

Student Prizewinners

Ben Hoskins

Above: Park College Award goes to Ben Hoskins. Sponsored by Mayo Wynne Baxter. Ben achieved an astounding five A levels at A grade which included a self-taught unit on cosmology. He is now at Oxford University studying Economics and Philosophy.

Hamish Hancock

Above: Lewes 6th Form College award goes to Hamish Hiscock. Sponsored by The Grand Hotel. Hamish's tutors said he has a very mature attitude to study and his study skills are exemplary. His subjects include chemistry, double maths, physics and music plus the pre professional music diploma.

Adward Farragher

Above: Eastbourne Vocational College Award goes to Edward Farragher (award accepted by Edward's father). Sponsored by OyezStraker. Edward finished his BTEC National Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering this July. He won this award because of his willingness to help others, his dedication and worked hard. He is now at Southampton University studying Maths.

Above: International College Award goes to "Tommy" Pik Tin Jin. Tommy completed the English Language Plus course, AS Chinese, AS Maths and business, and the IELTS exam. Sponsored by Chartwells.

Shirley Thorpe

Above: Adult College Award goes to Shirley Thorpe. Sponsored by Eastprint. Shirley has worked hard to achieve her NVQ Retail Train to Gain level 3 award. Her bubbly enthusiasm is infectious. Working as shop manager at Cancer Research in Shoreham she maintains the highest standards and this has resulted in the branch being recognised as the best performing shop in the area.

Amey Hope

Above: Entry 2 Education Award (E2E) goes to Amey Hope. Sponsored by Lloyds TSB. Amey has benefited from the course and now displays excellent determination to pass her literacy and numeracy qualification. Her self confidence has increased and she has recently represented E2E at the student council.

Oliver Everest

Above: 14-16 Student Award goes to Oliver Everest. Sponsored by Tenon.

Sarah Ellis

Above: Learner Achiever Award goes to Sarah Ellis. Sponsored by Baker Tilly. Sarah has successfully completed the Access to Higher Education pathway and is now at Brighton University studying primary education.

Anthony Simmons

Above: Skills for Life Award goes to Anthony Simmons. Sponsored by Chartwells. Antony from Peacehaven has made real progress with his communication skills and is now a regular book reader.

David Wheeler

Above: Sporting Excellence Award goes to David Wheeler. Sponsored by Brighton and Hove Albion. David not only plays regularly for Lewes Football Club at the Dripping Pan but has also been selected to represent England on five occasions at an international level. He was a dedicated and committed student gaining three A grades in his A levels.
