Cash in the Attic for college Ugandan project
Cash in the Attic came to the Lewes campus of Sussex Downs College to catch up with Cay Towner, course coordinator at Sussex Downs College and her colleague Ian Elgie. Cay opened her home to the Cash in the Attic team to raise cash for the Buwanyanga village project in Uganda that the College has been helping for a number of years.
"The rummage day was both fascinating and exhausting. It was worth it though, as they found several items worth selling for my trip to Uganda. The Cash in the Attic team were really friendly and very encouraging when we got a bit nervous in front of the cameras" said Cay.
Cay will join the students this year when they travel to Uganda.Buwanyanga is a very poor area in Uganda, with many of its people struggling to provide their families with everyday necessities such as clean running water and a basic food supply.

Each year the College sends out a team led by world development lecturer Ian Elgie. The students are given the opportunity to spend their summer holidays in Uganda, helping the local community. The first programme is a two week intensive study programme where the students learn in detail through visits, workshops and seminars the complexity of development issues in an economically poor country. Issues studied include food security, agricultural development, health including hospital and health clinic visits, diet and nutrition, water and sanitation and not least education. A small number of students will then have the chance to stay on for a further period up to 3 months, where they are based at a rural development centre in eastern Uganda engaging in a variety of community projects.
The series is produced by Leopard Films on behalf of the BBC. The episode featuring Cay is due to be broadcast during the summer.
