Part-Time Courses September - December 2010
Sussex Downs College offers a range of part-time English language programmes at our Eastbourne and Lewes campus. Part-time courses take place during the day and evenings to ensure that students with work or family commitments can attend.
Please note: Visa national students are required to take a full-time course of 15 hours per week. These students can then take part-time or evening programmes in addition to their full-time course.
Part-Time Courses In Eastbourne
IELTS Preparation (Daytime Class)
This course is suitable for students with an intermediate level of English who wish to follow an academic or vocational course in the UK and need to be thoroughly prepared for the IELTS test. Emphasis is placed on academic English and the development of the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills that are required to achieve a good score in the test. The test is available on campus at least once a month.

Evening Programmes
These Cambridge Exam Preparation classes develop the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills required to achieve the relevant Cambridge Exam. Although it is not necessary to take an exam at the end of this course, the focus is on exam preparation.
Preliminary English Test (PET): This course is for students with a strong pre-intermediate or intermediate level of English.

How To Book Your Course Part-Time Course In Eastbourne
Before starting on these classes it is important to complete a placement test to ensure the class is at the right level. Your level test will take place on Wednesday 1st September 2010 at 13.30 or 18:00 and Wednesday 8th September 2010 at 13.30 or 18:00. The test will take one and a half hours to complete.
If you are unable to make this please contact Elaine Gower to arrange an alternative time to take your placement test.
You will be required to enrol and pay for the course in full by Wednesday 15th September 2010 and you will also be required to purchase a book at £25.00.

Part-Time Courses In Lewes
Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET)
This class prepares students for the Cambridge Preliminary English Test and is intended for lower intermediate students who are not ready for First Certificate. It will develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Students taking this class would usually join a First Certificate class later on in their studies. The PET exam may be taken at Sussex Downs in December, March and June and Cambridge examination fee is approximately £30.00 (December 2009).

This class prepares students for the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) exam, which can be taken at the college in December, March and June. Cambridge First Certificate is an upper-intermediate English language qualification. The current FCE examination fee (December 2009) is £54.00.

This class is suitable for those students who have taken the Cambridge Advanced English exam. The Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency English (CPE) exam may be taken at the college in December and June. The current CPE examination fee is currently £61.00 (December 2009).

English For Business (EDI/LCCI)
These classes, which are for intermediate students and above, will cover the main areas of general business, e.g. sales, production and marketing. The emphasis will be on the active use of business vocabulary through discussion, role-play, text analysis, letter and report writing.
Education Development International (now merged with LCCI, London Chamber of Commerce and Industry) English for Business Level exams can be taken at Sussex Downs College at the end of each term.
Exam fees depend on the number of students taking the exam and can vary in cost.

Part-Time In-Fill Courses
It is sometimes possible to join a full-time class when there is space available. However, decisions on this will have to wait until the second or third week of term when all the full-time students have enrolled.
Spoken English For Examinations
In this class the emphasis is on the practical use of English aiming to improve the accuracy and fluency of the students’ spoken English and to develop their listening skills. It will also help students prepare for Cambridge and IELTS speaking examinations. The classes are on different days of the week according to the level.
General English Or Reading And Writing/Listening And Speaking
These classes are for students whose English is of an elementary to low intermediate level. These classes take place on a Monday or a Wednesday morning 09.00-12.05.
IELTS
This is a course which helps students prepare for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam and is primarily for someone wishing to study at a British university.
Please note: You will need to pay the IELTS examination fee which is currently £105.00 (cash) or £110.00 (credit card) for 2009. These Classes run on a Tuesday morning 09.00–12.05.
