Navigate - free service at Sussex Downs College

Navigate is aimed at helping those who are facing an uncertain time in their employment or those looking for a new job. It is a support programme that provides free training and guidance.
The service provides a range of workshops to help people rethink their approach to work plus careers advice and support. Candidates are offered an initial grounding session looking at personal development, CV writing and interview skills. This is followed by taster pathway workshops which can introduce new topics of learning. There is also an opportunity to undertake a range of non accredited courses which allow study in greater detail. This will then hopefully lead to employment or further opportunities to undertake an apprenticeship or other formal training leading to a qualification.

Success stories
Laurence Wynne
Laurence Wynne from Brighton is a success story for the Navigate programme run by Sussex Downs College. In addition to enrolling on this redundancy programme, Laurence also took part in the Certificate in Community Justice Award which is based at Denton Island in Newhaven.
The programme allowed Laurence to update and review a number of skills including interview, skills for life and computer knowledge through the Clait course. He has now found a new job as a Project Officer at CRI who are the national provider of support, treatment and rehabilitation programmes for those whose lives are blighted by substance misuse, crime and lack of opportunity.
Laurence said: “I would like to thank everyone I came into contact with at the college, from the course tutors, to my navigate advisor to the reception staff at Newhaven. Without programmes like this and people believing in me I would not have made it. I kept knocking on doors and you opened it for me and it has changed my life”
Russ Perkins
Russ Perkins had worked in media as a journalist for nearly 40 years before recently being made redundant. Russ said: " I have started to undertake some life coaching courses which look at how I see others and how other people react to me.
"During my working career I was office based for most of my career although my job role changed and the way in which we did things certainly changed Navigate is now helping me think outside the box. I enjoy working with my hands and being in the open air, perhaps these strands will lead me to a new career."
Russ has been assigned a Navigate Advisor, Lee Furlong who is able to help Russ as he embarks on a range of courses and taster workshops.
