The PGCE/Certificate Post-Compulsory Education is a two year course designed to provide a teaching qualification appropriate to the post-compulsory sector. They are endorsed under the Equipping our Teachers regulations 2007 by the Standards Verification UK (SVUK) as meeting the new Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) Standards for Teachers, Trainers and Tutors in the Lifelong Learning (Post-compulsory) Sector. The qualification is equivalent to the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) at three different levels; level 4 (Cert Ed), level 6 (Professional Graduate Cert Ed) or level 7 (Postgraduate Cert Ed).

Incorporating PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, CTLLS (Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector and DTLLS (Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector).
It is also possible to complete the first two modules of Year 1 and exit the course with the CTLLS qualification. In addition the College also offers a separate PTLLS (Level 3).

This is the general accepted qualification for teachers in post compulsory education and is certificated by the University of Brighton. The course is designed to assist trainee teachers already working in the sector to enhance their skills of learning and teaching through practical application in the classroom, through reflection on practice and through academic study. Trainees are often based in a College of Further Education or Sixth Form College, but may be working in other organisations such as private training companies, or the National Health, or Uniformed Services.

The programme is delivered through seven modules over two years that reflect the key areas identified within the new standards. These are:

Year 1

• Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
• Planning and Enabling Learning in the Lifelong Learning Sector
• Theories and Principles for Planning and Enabling Learning
• Enabling Learning and Assessment

Year 2

• Curriculum Design for Inclusive Practice
• Action Learning for Subject Specialist Pedagogy
• Professional Development and Wider Professional Practice

Progression opportunities: successful applicants on the Cert Ed have the option of transferring to the part time BA (Hons) Professional Education Studies at the end of their course of study.

The part time route takes a minimum of two years to complete. Sussex Downs College is in the unique position of being able to offer the part time year one route in addition to the part time year two. Together these two qualifications comprise the full PGCE/Cert Ed.
