What are Skills for Life courses?
These are often called Literacy (English) and Numeracy (Maths) classes. The Skills for Life department at Sussex Downs College is large and we currently have about 800 students brushing up on their reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening skills, or maths skills.

How much?
They are all FREE.

Are they for me?
Our courses are for adults only. You can choose to come to a Maths or English class or work on your own on a computer (e-learning). It’s not like school!

Can I study in a class?
Yes. We have small, friendly classes in Eastbourne, Lewes, Newhaven and in community venues. Classes are small, which means that students get lots of help from the tutors. All tutors are very experienced in teaching adult students and
have a real understanding of their needs so you can work at your own pace. You can choose from morning, afternoon or evening classes. It’s a chance to make new friends too!

Can I study on my own?
Yes . You can learn online with tutor support (e-learning). This is available at Eastbourne, Lewes, Newhaven and Hailsham. If you’re not able to attend a class regularly, or if you work shifts, have young children or family commitments, then think about our e learning option. All of your course work is online and you learn at your own pace with a dedicated tutor to support you throughout your course.

Skills for Life character“I finally plucked up courage to take hold of my maths phobia and realised that it is not such a scary subject, I’m even appying for jobs!”

Have I missed the start date?
No. We offer classes throughout the year.

How will English and Maths help me?
You will work in a friendly atmosphere at your own speed and will work towards national qualifications in literacy and numeracy when you are ready. Many of our students go on to other courses in the college, such as GCSEs, Access to Higher Education and national diplomas. These qualifications can help you at work or to find a new job.
