Promoting vocational excellence for the South East

World Skills LogoSussex Downs College has been marking WorldSkills Activity Week (22nd – 26th February 2010) by staging displays at its campus sites in Lewes, Newhaven and Eastbourne by encouraging talented learners to register for regional and national competitions.

The deadline for entries for this year’s cycle of competitions is 19 March 2010. Through these regional and national competitions UK Skills find exceptional competitors to represent the UK at WorldSkills 2011.

Two lecturers from Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne, have been appointed as Workshop Supervisors for the London 2011 WorldSkills Competition. Kevin Diett, Curriculum Leader for Brickwork and Jeff Hayes, Curriculum Leader for Electrical Installations will be overseeing brickwork and electrical installations.

Two beauty therapy students from Sussex Downs College in Lewes triumphed last June at the National UK Skills finals. Becky Waller (19) from Hassocks, a first year student, took first place winning gold in intermediate beauty therapy, with second year student, Hannah Smith (17) from Seaford, taking silver in the advanced beauty therapy competition.

As a region, the South East did well in the last cycle of competitions, but is aiming to do even better. Involvement in regional competitions resulted in six South East competitors making it into Team UK for the last WorldSkills competition in Calgary. Team UK came 7th in the world and the SE competitors brought home four Medallions for Excellence and a Gold Medal which was a fantastic achievement!

In October 2011, London will host the next international skills competition, WorldSkills where 50 countries come together to compete to find the very best in over 40 vocational skills. This is a unique opportunity to raise the profile of vocational skills and the South East’s talented individuals.
