Sporting achievements at Sussex Downs College
Here are just a few of our students who have excelled in their chosen sport, many becoming household names.
Claire Manton
Claire was a keen and high achieving sport student at Sussex Downs College Lewes. She qualified with an Olympic time in 2003 and made it into the U18 national swimming squad. She won six titles as her Brighton club dominated the Sussex Championship. Claire won the 100m freestyle and breaststroke, plus the junior and senior titles at 200m individual medley and breaststroke.
Gemma Deacon and Tara Smith
Gemma and Tara were keen physical education students, both studying 4 A levels together with being on the hockey development squad. Alongside all of this both represented Great Britain in the water polo team.
Kate Gibbs, Ella Gibbs, Jessica Cox, Tracy Moss and Sam Pasco
All achieved a place in the National squad for sailing and Adam Pasco has sailed for Great Britain in many races, winning gold on numerous occasions.
Natalie and Rebecca Miller
The Miller sisters are recent students at the college, they have been studying a full AS level timetable and also play for the England Home Training Squad.
Alistair Boyse
Alistair played for the England and Great Britain hockey team and with many national league hockey clubs. He had a great scoring record for his county and is recorded as one of the all time greats in the sport.
Jeremy Boyse
Played for the Great Britain hockey team indoor and outdoor and was in the top 5 indoor goal scorers of all time.
Ben Hawes
With 83 England appearances to his name, Hawes first made his international appearance at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He failed to make the squad for last summer’s Euro Hockey Nations Championships, held on the same ground, but has battled his way back into the Great Britain squad, for whom he has made 62 appearances, scoring 19 goals. Hawes captained the side to Gold at the Olympic qualifiers in Chile and was a member of the Great Britain squad at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where he scored in the opening 3–1 win over Egypt. The 28-year-old was also on target during the penalty shoot-out against South Africa that secured 9th position. He has also played in a World Cup and two European Championships, picking up a Bronze Medal in Leipzig in 2005.
Alex Rogers
Alex Rogers studied in Lewes from 2003 – 2005. He is now a regular member of the Harlequins rugby union side playing at prop. His honours include playing in the England U 19’s (2005 World Championships), England U18 and was a regular player for London and South East team.
Nick Champness
Nick plays one armed golf championships. He is currently the world number one. In his career Nick has won the world championships six times. He has also played national league hockey.
Ben Sanderson
Ben was in the National Judo Squad whilst attending Sussex Downs College Lewes.
Wendy String, Rachael Strong, Erica Rogers and Amy Wayne
They all reached the British Colleges hockey squad. Playing many games for the team. Wendy has recently played for the British Universities side and was nominated for England assessment. She was voted BUSA player of the year in 2006, she now plays for Horsham.
David Wheeler
David Wheeler has recently been selected to represent England at football. David has been named in the England Schools U18s squad. He was selected after recently attending national trials. He is a regular for Lewes FC.
Ryan Teager
Ryan Teager has been selected for the England Colleges Elite Rugby Squad. Ryan from Uckfield is enrolled on the rugby sports development course in Lewes. Ryan has been selected as part of the first choice 22 and will join the England squad for future matches. Ryan was a member of the winning team from Sussex Downs College that won the Daily Mail National Vase at Twickenham stadium in April 2008.
