STEM Project
Engineering challenge for Sussex Downs students
Four physics AS students from Sussex Downs College in Lewes have been selected to take part in the national STEM project (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) in association with the University of Brighton and 4Delivery.
The challenge for the science heroes will be to produce a viable engineering project in response to a brief worked out with 4D. The overall aim of the project is to promote engineering in further education.
4Delivery, who are providing a dedicated civil engineer to the project, is a consortium comprising United Utilities, Costain and MWH. It is carrying out a £700 million programme of environmental improvement and water quality schemes for Southern Water across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, along with the £300 million Wastewater Treatment Scheme for cleaner seas in Sussex.
With a training unit at Ham Lane in Lewes, 4Delivery will be working with the students to develop an aspect of the new wastewater treatment works and pumping station for the residents of Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean and Brighton and Hove which are being built in Peacehaven.
As part of the STEM project process the students will be having a three day residential workshop and will have access to the engineering research facilities at the University of Brighton.
STEM helps make students understand that science and technology does not just happen in the classroom but is a hugely important and exciting employment sector to be involved in. Students will get to think about real- life issues connecting with our most inspiring young scientists.
