Welcome To Sussex Downs College

Sussex Downs College is a significant college in East Sussex; providing high quality education and training for almost half of the county’s young people.  The excellent quality of the College’s work was recognised by the award of Beacon status from the Government in May 2008.  This means that we have the opportunity to share our good practice with other colleges, schools and training providers.  With East Sussex County Council we are a co-sponsor of The Eastbourne Academy – an 11-16 academy which is rapidly raising standards and improving life chances for young people in the heart of Eastbourne.   We are also a member of the prestigious 157 Group of Colleges nationally, who work together to promote and develop further education. The high standards at Sussex Downs College are founded on the expertise, experience and talents of our staff and the many achievements of our learners.  Our diverse curriculum ensures that there are education and training pathways for a wide variety of learners, employees and communities.  We work from campuses in Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven, and on employers’ premises.  We have strong relationships with over 1000 local employers, other educational providers and a range of voluntary and community partners.Sussex Downs College has been awarded Artsmark Gold for its creative and performance arts education, by Arts Council England.  We are one of just fifteen colleges across the country that has achieved the Gold award.

History of the college

Sussex Downs College (SDC) was established in 2001 by the merger of Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology and Lewes Tertiary College. A second merger with Park College in 2003 made us the largest College in Sussex and one of the most significant colleges in the South East. We now have approximately 5,000 mostly full-time students under the age of 19 and around 10,000 adult learners. The College has 1200 staff and an annual turnover of almost £40 million.

The College Vision is…

...to be a forward-thinking College; valued by the learners, parents and employers that we serve for promoting high expectations and for contributing to social, cultural and economic prosperity.  Through our expert and committed staff, we will build and sustain our reputation for excellence; supporting all our learners to achieve their potential, gain personal fulfilment and enhance their employment prospects.
