Do you have the leadership qualities, passion and vision to enable our College to meet the learning needs of our communities?

There are 235 Further Education Colleges across England and between them they educate 3 million adults and 600,000 16- 19 year olds each year. A fact that is less known is that each of them has a Board of Governors who work unpaid to provide direction and leadership for the Colleges.

Sussex Downs College provides high-quality education and training for 17,000 students at campuses in Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven. It has a turnover of £32 million and – with over 1,000 staff – we are one of the largest employers in East Sussex.

The College is entering an era of unprecedented change and challenge in continuing to deliver quality education and training. We now require the highest calibre of Governance to support the College management team to meet these challenges and will be recruiting four governors. If you have a passion for working in the interests of learners, possess exceptional commercial vision and the credibility to engage effectively with key partners, we’d like to hear from you.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in community matters, education, finance and business. A successful track record at senior level with excellent leadership skills; a strategic vision and a demonstrable commitment to quality improvement are desirable.

The appointment is for a four-year term of office and the time commitment of the role of Governor is approximately 12 meetings a year (although this will fluctuate due to business circumstances), including attendance at evening Board and Committee meetings. Agreed expenses will be paid and training opportunities will be available during the term of office.

Aspiring Governors should have an interest in the development of the local community and economy and be passionate about student success.

Your company may have Employer Supported Volunteer policy in place to further support you as a Governor.  You benefit from this rewarding voluntary role by:-

  • Developing skills in a different area to your profession.
  • Serving the community in a way which utilises and reinforces your senior level experience.
  • Gaining an opportunity to develop leadership skills in a personal and professional context.
  • Having the chance to “give back” to this area and make a real difference to the lives and employment opportunities for our young people.
