Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)

CELTA will provide you with an initial qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages. You can study full or part-time.

The CELTA course is combined with PTLLS (Preparation to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). This qualification confers a 'threshold to teach' which is a requirement for new teachers in adult education. You will gain two qualifications in the same amount of time.

If you need any information contact Tasveer Shemza (course co-ordinator) for an appointment or Margaret Furness (administrator).

Increase your chance of success with our eight hour Grammar Course

The Cambridge CELTA course requires trainees to be able to breakdown grammatical concepts and analyse different areas in order to effectively plan their teaching sessions. This is something that many trainees find challenging.

Sussex Downs College have designed a short course specifically to address this area. It provides a general introduction to the different tenses used in English, then demonstrates how to breakdown the grammar and analyse the relevant aspects.

There is, of course, time to practise and work through examples so that trainees feel more confident when they are asked to do this on the CELTA course.
