East Sussex Academy of Music

The East Sussex Academy of Music (ESAM) is a unique place. Join us, and we guarantee you will be excited and challenged by the experience. We’ve been established since the 80’s, but in 2003 we moved into the purpose-built Performing Arts Centre based at Sussex Downs College Lewes campus.  This is where you will find East Sussex Music and the highly rated Performing Arts  courses.

You will be taught by teachers who are currently within the music industry themselves as well as being around like minded students of a high standard.

What students say

Pat Weaver

“There is such a nice atmosphere within ESAM, everyone respects each other and leaving will be hard! I will be studying to become a musician and I have ESAM and its teachers to thank for their support.”

Patrick Weaver – clarinettist

“ESAM has been like a second family to me, it will be weird not to play in ensembles with everyone every week. I am utterly blessed to know everyone here and thank you for your support.

Katie Warren – saxophone

“What a fantastic end to my two years here. Brilliant concert last night topped by performing at the Hangleton Festival. Couldn’t ask better than spending two years amongst talented staff and students”

Harry Plant – trumpet

“I’m so glad I came to Sussex Downs College and studied music. I was unsure at first because it was such a big step for me, but I made friends and joined a folk band straight away. The performance opportunities it gave me where the best thing to build my confidence and performance, and I’m now off to Ireland to study folk music. Thanks all at ESAM!”

Ella Partington – folk fiddler

“Thanks to connections made at ESAM through staff and ex students, I gained a place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. If you really push yourself, make friends and connections and work hard you will get so much out of your two years at ESAM and go on to good things”

George Nicola – guitar
