The learning centres have a wide selection of books, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, magazines and electronic journals and databases to support your research needs. The Learning Centres hold more than 48 000 books, more than 150 journal titles, more than 3000 e-books, access to 15 electronic databases and provide access to more than 200 computers. The full list of resources can be found on the Leaning Centre catalogue (Heritage) on the learning centres or ilearn pages. Click in this link to access the Learning Centre Catalogue. We also offer stationery for sale, access to binding and laminating facilities, photocopiers and printing.
The Learning Centre subscribes to several online resources, such as databases containing newspaper articles, art images, dictionaries, business information and collections of E-books. Links to these resources can be found on the Learning Centres pages on our ilearn pages. Each resource may be searched individually, but to make searching easier, we now have a single portal for searching all of our online resources, through our Discovery tool. The Discovery tool is easy to use, and can be accessed via our ilearn pages.
Using a Computer in the LEARNING CENTRE
The Learning Centres provide computers to enable students to complete course work while on campus. The computers are provided on a drop in basis, and it is not necessary to book a computer. However, it is possible to book a PC for a specific time, or to book a machine with specific software or in a specific zone of the Learning Centre. To Make a booking, please click on the following link My PC (computer booking system).
In addition to the PCs we have a range of laptops which may be used in the Learning Centres.
The Learning Centre computers are provided for course work only, and to ensure there are computers available for students needing to complete their work, we do not permit the use of social networking sites or game playing.
THE SUSSEX DOWNS College Wireless network
Our wireless network is available in the Learning Centres, and in various spots around campus. This means you can bring your own laptop, netbook, smartphone or iPad to use in college. Power-points are available for laptops in the Learning Centres. Please use headphones or ensure that all sounds are turned off.
The Learning centres are divided into colour coded zones.
Students have different study styles – some students like to work with noise, others like to work in silence. To try and accommodate these very different needs, the LCs are divided into zones:
Yellow = group work – in this area, you may work together, talk quietly about work
Green = Individual study – this is for working on your own
Blue = silent study. No talking allowed
