If you are aged 19 or over looking to study at Sussex Downs College you are entitled to an ‘Advanced Learner Loan’ to help support your learning.
The Government has introduced the Advanced Learner Loan which provides a means for anybody aged 19 and over to improve their qualifications through access to further education.
The Advanced Learner Loan: Three learners tell their stories
Loans are available for individuals undertaking A-Levels, AS-Levels, Access to HE Diplomas and vocational, technical and professional qualifications at level 3, 4, 5 and 6.
- Loans give individuals access to financial support for tuition costs similar to that available in higher education and are administered by Student Loans Company (SLC).
- Repaying a Loan is straightforward; repayments will be collected through PAYE or self-assessment once an individual’s income is more than £21,000 each year.
- Loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks and any learner who meets the criteria will be able to apply for a Loan regardless of their current employment status.
- Learners who take out a Advanced Learner Loan for an Access to HE course maybe able to get the balance of the Loan written off after completing a designated Higher Education course.

Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund
Students who are 19 and over at the start of their course and have taken out an Advanced Learner Loan and have a household income of £35,000 or less may be eligible for an award from the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary. Awards may be available to help with the cost of Learning Support, childcare and travel. Funds are limited and eligibility is no guarantee an award will be made.
