Person-centred Counselling FdSc

Person-centred Counselling is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and is based at Sussex Downs College. The course enables students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work as effective person-centred counsellors within a range of working environments. We provide a challenging and stimulating environment to facilitate your growth and development as a counsellor.

Course structure

Learning is experiential and personal development forms an important part of the course. The skills and professional attitudes of counselling are developed in groups of two or three students, small and large groupwork, seminars, creative workshops, tutor led discussions and lectures. The group process forms an important part of your learning and as such the group becomes closed after the first four weeks.

Your progress and development on the course is monitored continually via peer and tutor assessment and specific assignments at the end of each term. To further support your growth as a counsellor and to meet BACP requirements you will complete 100 hours placement work and receive regular counselling supervision. You will also be required to spend some time during the course in personal therapy.

Areas of study

The course is based on the person-centred philosophy and therapy of Carl Rogers. All course tutors are qualified and experienced person-centred counsellors who demonstrate and model the core components of the philosophy underpinning client-centred theory and practice.
